MIA HUMPHREY
A NOTE FROM MIA
Hi! I’m Mia! I’m a 22 year old songwriter and filmmaker, born and raised in Alexandria, VA. I graduated from Brown University in May of 2025 with a degree in filmmaking (Modern Culture and Media) and am now based in Nashville.
I love songwriting. I love storytelling. Most of all, I love making people feel things. Some of my favorite moments in life have been when I’ve been moved by art—a live performance, a song, a scene in a movie. Art that allows you to escape your reality, but also somehow helps you understand and process your reality a little bit better…that’s my favorite thing in the world. And that’s why I do what I do.
My songs are little pieces of myself that I expose to the world. Most of them are quite literally pages out of my diary. I write songs in my darkest moments, in my happiest moments. I’ve found that songwriting not only helps me process what I’m going through, but is one of the only ways I truly feel seen. I hope that my songwriting not only helps me feel seen, but that it helps you and your life experience feel seen too.
Everything I put out into the world is a part of me. It is how I make sense of things. It is honest (which also happens to be the name of the first single I ever released). Every project I work on, I grow. I hope you come along for the journey :)
ABOUT
Mia Humphrey is a 22-year old singer-songwriter and filmmaker from Alexandria, Virginia, whose work is built around a desire to connect with others through storytelling. Mia began journaling and writing songs in her early teens to work through her day-to-day life experiences. She released her first two singles in the summer of 2020 - "Honest" in June 2020 and "Parties" in July 2020. In November 2020 as a high school senior, Mia released Project Red Notebook, her first EP, named for the red composition books that Mia filled with her songs. The EP contains five songs that range from a celebration of the excitement of a new crush who shares her love for Converse high tops (“Black High Tops”) to somber questioning and self-doubt about her own worthiness for love (“I’m So Sorry”). The EP’s final track, “Summer 17,” chronicles the struggle to reconcile the conflict between her expectations of a 17-year-old’s normal summer and life in the Covid pandemic. The song resonated deeply with her classmates and the Alexandria community, and Mia performed it on stage at her high school graduation from T.C. Williams High School (now Alexandria City High School).
In her final weeks before college, she collaborated with music producer and childhood friend, Henry Wiedemer, to release her second EP, The Garden. The Garden explores the challenges of making the transition from high school to adulthood, including songs like “Party for No One,” which recounts the frustration and loneliness of being the last person left after friends have moved on.
During high school, Mia enjoyed writing, directing, and editing short satirical films for class projects. These experiences led to her love of filmmaking and her choice to study Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. At Brown, Mia continued making short films. In early 2023, Mia released "Wine Drunk" simultaneously as a single and a short film of the same name that she wrote and directed. Mia’s first publicly released multimedia project connected to one of her songs, “Wine Drunk” was inspired by an evening’s ruminations on the history and possibilities of a long-standing on-and-off relationship and by a cheap bottle of wine. The song (in two parts) and the film carry the listener musically and lyrically through all the conflicting emotions that these wine-infused reminiscences and musings create. This began Mia’s deeper dive into the power of combining both audio and visual storytelling.
In fall of 2023, Mia released "Newport," a song that bounces jauntily through the challenges of dating and a particular whirlwind of a relationship that does make the trip to Newport, Rhode Island, just not quite in the manner originally contemplated. Mia also released an acoustic version of the song to give listeners a look at the lens through which she originally wrote the song. In early 2024, Mia collaborated with friend and fellow songwriter, Emma Rosenkranz, to release a single called “Toothpaste” which is featured on Emma’s sophomore album A Year’s Time.
After spending the summer of 2024 in Nashville working at a recording studio and songwriting, Mia released her EP White Flag in September 2024. Her first self-produced project, White Flag finds Mia at her most vulnerable as she explores the devastation of a relationship that caused her to question her sense of self. Written in real time as the relationship evolved, the tracks in White Flag take the listener through the pains and loneliness of a relationship where one finds love is unrequited. The third track and title song for the EP, “White Flag,” is about finally choosing yourself over the love you have for your partner.
During her senior year at Brown, Mia completed her most ambitious project yet—the six song visual album Pains of Growing. In Pains of Growing, Mia weaves together her songwriting and visual storytelling into a 33-minute film that delves into the struggle to maintain her identity while facing the challenges of adulthood. The first two singles from the project, “In My Bones,” and “Best Friend,” were released in May and July of 2025. The rest of the project’s release has yet to be announced. Stay tuned for new music and film announcements coming soon.
